The moment of triumph for HBO is coming at a time of transition for the network, which since last year has been run by a debt-ridden parent company, Warner Bros. The network is now part of a streaming service that removed its call letters (bye HBO Max, hello Max). HBO had the three most nominated shows: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). It was in 1992, when NBC landed nominations for “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap.” All four series lost to that year’s winner, “Northern Exposure,” from CBS.

I’m at a loss for words to explain the growing use of coarse language in everyday conversation. When friends or colleagues use the F-word as matter-of-factly as my parents said “gosh” or “golly,” it makes me cringe—but I seem to be part of a bleeping minority. I thought about this while watching the comedy series “Shrinking” on Apple TV+, starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford as therapists practicing in Pasadena, Calif. Every character, including Mr. Segel’s teenage daughter, played by Lukita Maxwell, uses the F-word with startlingly casual frequency. In a recent 29-minute episode, these well-educated, affluent Southern Californians said the word 30 times—including nine utterances by Mr. Segel and six by Ms. Maxwell.

The delicate polarities that exist within the world of “Shrinking” would certainly include the close-to-antic performance of Jason Segel vs. that of a dryly hilarious Harrison Ford. And the comic dynamic between the glorious Jessica Williams and the askew characters played by Messrs. Ford and Segel. But more essential to the 10-episode series is the seesawing sensation it maintains between profoundly dysfunctional people and feel-good comedy. But the overall sense is a little like laughing at a funeral; the human impulses are familiar, a little perverse and somehow comforting. Ms. Miller is wonderfully droll; Liz’s good deeds do not go unpunished.
